Avengers: Doomsday Release Date
Marvel Studios and Disney will release Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026, in more than 4,000 US theaters. The date has moved several times. The film was first slated for May 2025, then May 2026, before landing in December 2026 to give the production more time.
The date is a big deal for another reason. Dune: Part Three opens on exactly the same day and holds IMAX exclusivity for the first three weeks, which means Doomsday cannot play on US IMAX screens at launch. Marvel’s answer is a push toward other premium formats, including Dolby, ScreenX, D-Box and 4DX, plus Disney’s own Infinity Vision certification for premium screens. Exhibitors expect a potentially record-setting combined weekend for both films.
There is no streaming date yet. Like past Avengers films, it will play in theaters first, and a Disney+ release typically follows several months later.
Avengers: Doomsday Trailer
Marvel has rolled out the campaign in stages:
- Teasers before Avatar: Fire and Ash. Four short teasers played in theaters, and one revealed the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers.
- The first full trailer. It debuted at CinemaCon in April 2026 and reached the public later, drawing mixed reactions online.
- A Doom-focused special look. Released in August 2026 after San Diego Comic-Con and D23, it put Robert Downey Jr.’s villain front and center.
- A countdown podcast. A five-episode series, Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday, started on August 27, 2026.

Avengers: Doomsday Plot
The film is set about fourteen months after Thunderbolts*. There is no full official synopsis, but the core premise is clear: heroes from three universes come together to stop Doctor Doom.

- Earth-828. The Fantastic Four, the family that arrived in the MCU through The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
- The X-Men. The original X-Men, arriving from a separate universe.
Victor von Doom is one of Marvel’s greatest villains, a genius, a sorcerer and a ruler who does not know how to lose. Casting Robert Downey Jr., the actor who defined Iron Man, as the man behind the mask gives the story a strong emotional hook. Characters including H.E.R.B.I.E., Franklin Richards, Sentinels and Latverian witches are reported to appear as well.
The film also continues a story Marvel has been telling for years. The original plan built around Kang the Conqueror was dropped after Jonathan Majors was fired in December 2023, and Doctor Doom became the main threat of the Multiverse Saga. For fans who are new to the character, Doctor Doom is the ruler of the fictional European nation of Latveria and the greatest enemy of the Fantastic Four in the comics. Victor von Doom is a scientific genius who also masters sorcery, and he believes that only he is fit to rule the world. His armor, his pride and his tragic past make him far more than a standard villain. He is a man who sincerely thinks that his tyranny would save humanity.
That complexity is why the casting works so well. Robert Downey Jr. built his career on charismatic, brilliant and flawed characters, and Doom allows him to turn all of that into something colder and more dangerous. Do You Need to Watch Anything Before Avengers: Doomsday?

Behind the Camera
The Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe Russo, return to the MCU after directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame. The script comes from Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) alongside Stephen McFeely, who wrote the earlier Avengers films, and the writing team of Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Filming and Production
Principal photography began on April 28, 2025 at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England, and wrapped on September 19, 2025. The crew also filmed at Windsor Great Park, Shinfield Studios in Berkshire and on location in Bahrain. Marvel planned additional photography for early 2026, which is normal for a film of this scale.
The cast reveal was also a spectacle. In March 2025, Marvel streamed a roughly five-and-a-half-hour livestream of a chair by a fireplace while the cast was announced one by one, a stunt that became a cross-platform talking point.
Avengers: Doomsday Box Office Predictions
Early tracking is huge. According to reports, the film sold $16.5 million in premium-format presales in its first 24 hours in July 2026, reached $35 million in advance tickets by late August, and passed $50 million about 100 days before release. Disney said about 70% of those advance tickets were for Infinity Vision showings. Analysts currently project a domestic opening of roughly $260 to $300 million, which would place it among the biggest openings ever.
The IMAX situation is the main question mark. Without IMAX in the US for the first weeks, Doomsday will rely on other premium formats to hit those numbers. These are estimates, and real results depend on reviews and word of mouth.
