VisionQuest Trailer
The first trailer debuted at D23 in August 2026, where Paul Bettany and James Spader appeared on stage with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Marvel released the official poster the same day. Reviewers called the footage “trippy” and “mind-bending,” and many pointed out that the series looked even stranger than WandaVision.
The trailer shows Vision living quietly among humans, a mysterious bounty hunter closing in and a mansion inside Vision’s mind where his many voices argue. Marvel also showed early footage at Disney’s upfront presentation in May 2025 and at New York Comic Con in October 2025, so fans have been waiting for this one for a long time.
VisionQuest Plot
The story takes place around 2028, several years after the events of WandaVision. Vision has been rebuilt, often called White Vision, and he is hiding among ordinary people and working at a pub. He has his old memories back, but they feel like they belong to someone else. He has no emotional connection to the life he once lived, and that disconnect leaves him in a deep identity crisis.
At night he retreats into the Mindspace, a mansion inside his own head. There he talks to artificial intelligence personas he rescued from the Avengers Compound, including familiar voices from the past. One of those voices is Ultron, who appears in both human and android forms and is Vision’s most dangerous companion.
Then the outside world catches up. A bounty is placed on Vision’s head, and he is forced to run with Tommy Shepherd, a teenager who may be the reincarnation of his son Tommy Maximoff. Together they are hunted by a bounty hunter named Paladin while Vision tries to understand what it means to be a father, a machine and a man at once. The themes include fatherhood, inherited trauma and self-acceptance.
One important note for fans of the earlier shows: Wanda Maximoff does not appear in the series. Vision knows about her fate, and she is present only through memory footage and conversations. We are keeping the rest of the story spoiler-free.

Paul Bettany is the heart of the show, and it is an unusual challenge. He plays a being who is trying to feel what he used to feel, and critics have praised the performance. James Spader’s Ultron is the other big draw, since he gets some of the sharpest lines in the series. Newcomer Ruaridh Mollica has also drawn praise for his role as Tommy.
Fans have speculated about an appearance by Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch, but that is based on a fan reading of promotional images and has not been officially confirmed by Marvel.
Vision’s Journey in the MCU So Far
To understand why this series matters, it helps to remember how unusual Vision’s story has been. He was created in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) from the remains of Ultron’s body, the artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S. and the power of the Mind Stone, and he immediately sided with the Avengers. Over the next films he grew from a calm, curious newcomer into a trusted hero with a very human relationship to Wanda Maximoff.
In Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Vision was killed by Thanos when the Mind Stone was torn from his forehead. WandaVision (2021) then reimagined him through Wanda’s grief, with her magic building a fake suburban world in which he lived again. When that world ended, the “real” Vision was rebuilt as a white, emotionless version who flew away without his old memories, and that is the character VisionQuest picks up.
That history makes the new show more than a simple sequel. It asks an interesting question: if a being is rebuilt, and given back his memories without the feelings that went with them, is he still the same person? It is a question the MCU rarely stops to ask, and it is the reason many fans were excited for a show built around a single character.
Themes and Tone
VisionQuest moves away from the large-scale superhero action of the films and toward something smaller and stranger. The marketing describes it as a mix of adventure, mystery, science fiction and surreal comedy, and early reviews suggest it leans into all of those. The Mindspace scenes, where Vision argues with the voices of old AI companions, give the show room to be funny, eerie and emotional within a single episode.
- Identity: Vision must decide whether he is the person he was, the machine he is or something new.
- Fatherhood: The bond between Vision and Tommy is at the emotional center of the story.
- Inherited trauma: Old hurts and old programming keep reaching into the present.
- Artificial intelligence: The show gives its AI characters personalities and real arguments, rather than treating them as simple gadgets.
What to Expect from the Remaining Episodes
With the season airing weekly, the next episodes are titled “Reboot,” “Malware,” “Firewall,” “Deadlock,” “Immolation” and “Forever.” The titles hint at a story that keeps playing with computer and technology language, and that suggests the story will continue to mix personal drama with the chase across the world. Critics who have seen more of the season say the middle section gets crowded, while the performances stay strong all the way through.
If you are watching live, expect plenty of discussion online every Tuesday evening. To avoid spoilers, be careful with social media on release days, especially as the finale on November 10 approaches.
Who Made VisionQuest?
Terry Matalas, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard and 12 Monkeys, created the series and serves as showrunner. He wrote the first two episodes and also directed the last two. Earlier in development, Jac Schaeffer, the creator of WandaVision, was attached as head writer, but she was no longer involved by 2024.
The directors are Christopher J. Byrne (episodes 1 and 2), Gandja Monteiro (episodes 3 and 4), Vincenzo Natali (episodes 5 and 6) and Matalas himself (episodes 7 and 8). The score is composed by Mick Giacchino, and the cinematography is shared by Christopher Ross, Neville Kidd and Ben Smithard.
Filming and Production
Production began in early 2025 at Pinewood Studios in London under the working title Tin Man. Location shooting took place in and around London, and the crew built a practical set that represents the criminal city of Madripoor across two streets. Filming wrapped in the summer of 2025.
VisionQuest Reviews
Critics have been warm. Rotten Tomatoes scores have ranged from roughly 82% to 90% as reviews came in, and GamesRadar+ gave it three and a half stars, saying the show closes the loop on the MCU’s most unusual trilogy.
- What reviewers liked: Paul Bettany’s performance, James Spader’s Ultron, Ruaridh Mollica’s debut and the layered, twisty writing.
- What some did not like: A crowded middle stretch, a finale that may run long and a story that stands largely on its own rather than setting up future films.
Do You Need to Watch WandaVision First?
Yes, it helps a lot. VisionQuest is described as the final chapter of a trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along, although Matalas has said it is more of a direct sequel to WandaVision. These are the best titles to catch up on:
- WandaVision for Vision’s rebirth and his bond with Wanda and the twins.
- Agatha All Along, which teased Tommy’s storyline.
- Avengers: Age of Ultron to understand where Vision and Ultron both came from.
- Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for the fate of Wanda that Vision refers to.
How VisionQuest Connects to Avengers: Doomsday
VisionQuest is the last Marvel release before Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, 2026. Marvel has not said whether the show sets up the film, and reviewers say the series is mostly self-contained. Still, any new MCU story before a crossover event gets scrutinized for clues. Read our full guide to Avengers: Doomsday to see which heroes are returning.
